Quick Answer — Military Time

Military time uses a 24-hour clock (0000–2359). Hours 1–12 are AM; subtract 1200 from hours 1300–2359 for PM. Example: 1430 = 2:30 PM, 0730 = 7:30 AM. Many workplaces and hospitals use military time on timesheets to eliminate AM/PM confusion and make calculating work hours easier.

How to Calculate Work Hours Using Military Time

Subtract clock-in from clock-out. Military time makes this simple because you subtract directly without worrying about AM/PM crossovers.

Clock InClock OutHours WorkedWith 30-min Lunch
070015008h 00m7h 30m (7.5 hrs)
073016008h 30m8h 00m (8.0 hrs)
080016308h 30m8h 00m (8.0 hrs)
0630190012h 30m12h 00m (12.0 hrs)
1900070012h 00m11h 30m (overnight)
090017308h 30m8h 00m (8.0 hrs)
0700190012h 00m11h 30m (11.5 hrs)

Overnight Shifts

For overnight shifts where clock-out is the next day, add 2400 to the clock-out time before subtracting. Example: clock in 2200, clock out 0600 → 0600 + 2400 = 2600, then 2600 − 2200 = 400 = 4 hours. For a full overnight: clock in 1900, clock out 0700 → 0700 + 2400 = 2700, then 2700 − 1900 = 800 = 8 hours.

Military Time and Overtime

If your timesheet uses military time and you work more than 40 hours in a week, the overtime rules are the same as any other timesheet — federal FLSA requires at least 1.5× your regular rate for hours beyond 40. Military time format doesn't change your overtime rights.

Common industries using military time with overtime:

  • Nursing and healthcare — 12-hour shifts often logged as 0700–1900 or 1900–0700. Overtime kicks in after 8 hours/day in California or 40 hours/week federally.
  • Manufacturing and warehousing — rotating shifts logged in 24-hour format for clarity across shifts.
  • Security and law enforcement — 24/7 operations use military time to avoid AM/PM errors in incident reports and timesheets.
  • Transportation and logistics — Hours of Service (HOS) regulations use military time for driver logs.
