Time-and-a-half rate = Hourly rate × 1.5. Overtime pay = OT rate × overtime hours. Under federal FLSA, time and a half is required for all hours beyond 40 per week. At $20/hr, your OT rate is $30/hr. At $15/hr, it is $22.50/hr.
How to Calculate Time and a Half
Calculating time and a half takes three steps:
- Find your time-and-a-half rate: Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5.
- Count your overtime hours: Any hours beyond 40 in a workweek (or beyond 8/day in California).
- Multiply: OT rate × overtime hours = overtime pay.
Step 1 — OT rate: $18 × 1.5 = $27.00/hr
Step 2 — Overtime hours: 48 − 40 = 8 hours OT
Step 3 — Overtime pay: 8 × $27 = $216.00
Regular pay: 40 × $18 = $720.00
Step 1 — OT rate: $25 × 1.5 = $37.50/hr
Step 2 — Overtime hours: 50 − 40 = 10 hours OT
Step 3 — Overtime pay: 10 × $37.50 = $375.00
Regular pay: 40 × $25 = $1,000.00

Quick Answers — Common Hourly Rates
When Does Time and a Half Apply?
Federal FLSA rule: Time and a half is required for all hours beyond 40 in a workweek for non-exempt employees. "Workweek" is any fixed 7-day period your employer defines — not necessarily Monday–Sunday.
California rule: Time and a half also kicks in after 8 hours in a single workday and on the 7th consecutive workday (first 8 hours). Double time applies after 12 hours/day or 8 hours on the 7th day.
| Jurisdiction | Time and a Half Starts | Double Time |
|---|---|---|
| Federal (FLSA) | After 40 hrs/week | Not required |
| California | After 8 hrs/day OR 40 hrs/week | After 12 hrs/day |
| Nevada | After 8 hrs/day (if wage < 1.5× min wage) | Not required |
| Texas / Florida / NY | After 40 hrs/week only | Not required |
| Most other states | After 40 hrs/week (follows FLSA) | Not required |

If you're a non-exempt salaried employee, your employer must still pay time and a half for overtime. Here's how to calculate it:
- Divide your weekly salary by the number of hours it's based on (usually 40) to get your hourly rate.
- Multiply that rate by 1.5 to find your OT rate.
- Multiply OT rate by overtime hours worked.
Hourly rate: $900 ÷ 40 = $22.50/hr
OT rate: $22.50 × 1.5 = $33.75/hr
Overtime hours: 50 − 40 = 10 hrs
Overtime pay due: 10 × $33.75 = $337.50
Salaried employees earning more than $684/week who meet executive, administrative, or professional duties tests are exempt and not entitled to overtime under FLSA.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is time and a half for $15 an hour?
Time and a half for $15/hr is $22.50/hr ($15 × 1.5). If you work 5 overtime hours: 5 × $22.50 = $112.50 in overtime pay, for a weekly gross of $712.50.
What is time and a half for $18 an hour?
Time and a half for $18/hr is $27.00/hr. For 8 overtime hours: 8 × $27 = $216.00 overtime pay.
What is time and a half for $20 an hour?
Time and a half for $20/hr is $30.00/hr. For 10 overtime hours: 10 × $30 = $300.00 overtime pay, for a weekly gross of $1,100.
How do you calculate time and a half per hour?
Multiply your regular hourly rate by 1.5. That's it. $16/hr × 1.5 = $24/hr. The multiplier is always 1.5 for federally required time and a half.
Is time and a half the same as overtime?
Not exactly. Overtime means working more than 40 hours per week. Time and a half (1.5×) is the pay rate for those extra hours. So time and a half is the rate at which overtime hours are paid.
How do I calculate time and a half on a salary?
Divide your weekly salary by 40 (standard hours) to get your effective hourly rate, then multiply by 1.5 for your OT rate. See the salary example above.
Does time and a half apply on weekends or holidays?
Federal law doesn't require time and a half for weekends or holidays — only for hours beyond 40/week. If weekend or holiday work pushes you past 40 hours total, those extra hours earn time and a half. Many employers voluntarily pay OT on holidays as a benefit.
What is "time and a half" in other countries?
Overtime rules vary by country. Australia requires 1.5× for the first few overtime hours and 2× after that. Canada follows provincial rules, most requiring 1.5× after 8 hrs/day or 40-44 hrs/week. The UK has no statutory overtime rate — it depends on the employment contract.
